Travel Health Services
If you are planning to travel outside Canada, it is important to prepare well in advance. Some destinations require specific vaccinations or preventive medications before you travel.
Before your trip, consider the following:
Speak with your healthcare provider or pharmacist to determine whether you need travel vaccines or booster shots.
Plan, as some vaccines take 4 to 6 weeks to provide full protection, and some require more than one dose.
Make sure your routine vaccinations are up to date before travelling.
Check that you are protected against routine diseases such as measles, mumps, rubella, diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, chickenpox, polio, hepatitis B, and seasonal influenza.
Some countries, including parts of Africa and South America, require proof of yellow fever vaccination before entry.
If you are travelling to an area where malaria is common, your healthcare provider may prescribe anti-malaria medication. Although it is not a vaccine, it is important to take the medication exactly as directed, including after returning home.
If you are travelling to areas where mosquito-borne illnesses such as Zika or dengue are present, take appropriate precautions to avoid mosquito bites, as vaccines are not available for these diseases.
